January

Well its, been hot to say the least, when I mean hot, I mean over 40 degrees every day this last couple of weeks.
Tropical cyclone Iggy, instead of crossing the coast, just kept on going south west and brought with it
persistent north east winds. The swell flattened out and the mackerel and tuna turned on.
Frederick Hydenrych and crew this week landed 9 mackerel and a tuna, got bust up, sharked, beaten up and sunburnt
& had an awful lot of fun the day before with as much action. Photos next month of that trip.
While that was going on another boat was being beaten up by big tuna!
Yesterday (Wednesday) I was out with Frank Shelbie and Brian and it was non stop action. Mackerel, chunky yellow-fin tuna
& a memorable 18kg yellow-fin caught on 6kg line for Frank!
As predicted, it is going to be another awesome year for pelagics.
3 Mile Fires Again
A short trip out for a troll in the 6.5m boat along the mackerel patch between Red Bluff and Pot Ally failed to draw a strike
for John Abelotis and mates Andrew Buszan and 13 year old son, Andrew, Steven Skinner and Telli Flessas.

A change of location out to the 3 Mile produced a small tuna for Telli Flessas first up after losing a few strikes.
It was 13 year old Andrews birthday and they were all gunning for him to get a fish, so the next strike went to him,

resulting in this chunky striped tuna.

John Abelotis took the next strike that turned out to be a very nice 16.5kg long-tail tuna, which kept him
on the go for 45 minutes. Nice fish John.
The weather was pretty crappy, John threw up after landing the tuna and a few on board felt less than well so they
called it a day after Andrew senior landed his small yellow-fin tuna and were back by 11am.
Kalbarri lights up

Each year Kalbarri has its own Australia day fireworks, sponsored by local businesses. A casual stroll down to the foreshore
for a 30 minutes spectacular light show, sure beats fighting the traffic in Perth!

Troy returns for another shot
Troy Nguyan has hired the boats before and was keen for another shot at some mackerel.
The big group hired two boats and followed each other around, calling over the radio when a hook-up occurred
enabling them to maximise being on the right spot.
The mackerel did not disappoint and although it was slow to start, they came on the chomp around midday.
Andrew got his first ever mackerel and biggest fish

while Ann who featured prominently in last Octobers
Newsletter, got her mackerel as well as a couple of tuna.
Ann with one of her tuna
and Troy holds up a little stripy that was released.

Chai had a big hook-up on the other boat and took a while getting it in.
Turned out to be a reasonable yellow-fin tuna, too big for the esky looks like!

A few other catches
Mark holds up a very nice baldchin
while crew member from George Oginatis’s trip early January holds
up the only mackerel they got

A pink snapper caught by Ian Casley on the 26th December 2011, while anchored in the bay using squid bait is notable.

And this whale shark cruising just off the Sand Patch is an indication as to the strength of the current this year.
 Kids Treat
David Benny hired the 5.3m boat early January, taking his two sons out for a fish.
Weather was not the best and there was some feelings of seasickness for the kids & they were back in early without a fish,
much to their disappointment. David rang for me to bring the trailer down to the ramp as he was finished
for the day. (I launched and retrieved the boat for him).
I noted that the “bite time” was nigh and suggested I take him for a tailor fishing session  at Black Rock.
Youngest son Ryan was not so sure as he was still feeling sick but we he was out voted by older brother Christien.
David was first up landing a small one with a popper.
They were all over the popper with numerous hits before hooking up.

Christien was very pleased to get a bigger one than his dad, and right at the end of the bite,
Ryan eventually got his fish after dropping a few.

Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club & Ultra Light.
                     21st and 22nd January.

The 2 day Kalbarri ultra light again drew few boats. Mainly due to the time of year with persistent southerly winds at this time of year.
This year was not much better and a big swell a few days before dirtied the water making it hard to find any fish.
Wife Sue, who always does well in this comp could not make it and Frank who is fishing with me this year slipped a disc a couple
of days before, so it was just me and Shelbie aboard my big boat.
Shelbie dropped a couple of good fish
and her broad-barred mackerel did not go line class so it was just the two tuna on
2kg line that mattered.
Mine went a few grams bigger than Shelbie’s and no other boats weighed in.
At the last club meeting it was decided to change the date of the Ultra Light to early May next year where it will be beefed up,
with better weather, more fish about and better prizes.

The bottom guys did very well landing good fish such as an 8kg red emperor for Daniel, coral trout, mulloway and dhuies for Lui and
a 25kg samsonfish for Paul.
John Abelotis with the best fish caught this month, Landed out at the 3 Mile, on a very quiet day, but the size of the fish makes up for the low
number of strikes that day. A very nice 16.5kg long-tail tuna, which kept him on the go for 45 minutes.
Nice fish John.
