February

  Email: lasue@wn.com.au           www.murchisonboathire.com.au

Quite an awesome month again with lots of very good fishy days out there. Mackerel have been very good, if you can get away
from the tuna. Those fishing the bottom have had hit and miss days, but they could be just missing the bite time.
I am looking forward to the Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic on the 2nd to 4th March. Long range forecast looks like it will
be easterlies most of the time and the predicted swell this weekend did not eventuate.
However you can never predict the fishing conditions!

Practice Session
Frank Rystenberg and wife Shelbie have been fishing on my boat for the Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club local comps and I am training them up to fish line class
for mackerel and tuna. We have had a few training/practice runs resulting in some very good fish. Frank and Shelbie are fishing 4kg line
& have been landing mainly tuna that not quite make the 4kg mark. On one trip out early this month, I had my 6kg outfit out
Among the 4kg outfits when it went off. It was peeling a lot of line so I told Frank to take it while I reeled in his 4kg outfit.

45 minutes later, frank brought this 18kg yellow-fin tuna to the boat. Very good catch on 6kg mono which
would have earned him 300 points in a comp.

Kalbarri lights up
Trolling the 'Sand Patch' proved successful over the weekend for Darryl & Chloe. They are from Perth and had the 5.3m for a couple of days.
The weather was great and they trolled the reef edge in 21 meters of water, scoring 2 spanish mackerel, 6 yellow-fin tuna & 1 small long-tail tuna within
a couple of hours on the Sunday morning. Chloe had never experienced 'trolling' & had not caught a 'big' fish before.

She was well rewarded & excited to see plenty of big fish. Her excitement also encouraged her to give a few of the fish a kiss on the cheek.

When the water is this colour, you will get mackerel!
Darryl said the water temperature was quite warm, with the boats sounder recording 26 degrees. Early morning proved important for mackerel, however,
the tuna were seen feeding well into the later end of the morning. Best lure for mackerel was the trusty Halco Laser Pro 2m in hot pink (Chloe's favourite colour),
whereas the smaller Rapala Magnum proved deadly on tuna. Double hook-ups were common on tuna & if you had a spread of 3 or 4 lures, it would
only be a matter of waiting until all lures were hit.
The pelagic action will no doubt be exciting over the next couple of months with such warm currents & plenty of bait schools.

Thanks for the boat, Laurie. It was a good change to be able to hire a reliable boat (gotta love 4 strokes).
Looking forward to hiring it again, hopefully within the next couple of months.

Regards,
Darryl.

Scuba Diving Port Gregory.
Nick Crettenden and Connor Aherns have hired the 6.1m boat before and were up with a couple of mates for a shot at spear fishing.

They had all the gear and took the boat down to Port Gregory the fist day and went south to a spot I recommended.

They got a coral trout each, shot their first mackerel, a samsonfish, got a dhuie and had a great time.

Good sized coral trout south of Port Gregory.
They then spent a couple of days in Kalbarri landing mackerel, tuna and an assortment of bottom fish.

Tackle and Tactics

Harry Bouman from Fishing WA dropped in some of his latest imports for me to have a play with.
He has just come back from his trip to China.
Octopus style jigs in various sizes and rigged with 2/0 hooks. I am a big fan of these jigs having caught just about
every species around on one. I will be trying them out over the next few months and let you know how they go.
They will be available from his website and tackle shops soon. http://www.extremetackle.com.au/

Another Good day out
Dan Brandenburg has made a few trips out with me. Last time the pelagic action was extraordinary with multiple tuna hook-ups and
daughter Jess getting her first mackerel. This time was a bit different with mackerel a bit elusive, so we stopped over a nice lump
not far from the Sand Patch and let the lines to the bottom.
First up it was Dan landing a nice little coral trout,

followed by a few yellow-tail kings for Jess and Dan amongst other fish.
Not long after, Jess got her first dhufish, a 65cm specimen, which was the envy of dad Dan as he has not caught one yet!
The yellow-tail kingfish sure put up a good account for themselves.
On the troll back, they landed a couple of small yellow-fin tuna, making for a very enjoyable day out.

Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic
Besides myself entering the Classic with wife, Sue and John Hoye from Perth, I will have two other boats hired out
to fish the Classic this year.

Skipper, Dayle Serfozo and partner Janelle Kelly, nephew Tyson Sita and local girl Toni Trinka make up one team. They have one
of the 6.5m boats and will be fishing the bottom section. Their team name is the “Kalgoorlie Master Baiters”

The other 6.5m boat will be fishing the game section, consisting of skipper, Paul Youngman, who won the Champion Angler
Game, last year and new team mates Alan Stewart, Terence Boyce and Glenn Di Carlo who owns Getaway Outdoors Bentley.
They will be fishing under the boat name “Getaway Outdoors Bentley”
The weather is looking good for the comp with a low swell as well. The river is clear and is not going to flood as it did last year,
Boat numbers are up with quite a few new boat names entered so far.
I will feature some of the best fish in my March newsletter.

Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club Local Comp.
18th February.
Pretty ordinary weather presented itself for this comp again, but those who went out got some good fish.

A couple of nice mulloway taken from a new spot out wide for Ian and Lui

Sue and I got a striped tuna each on 3kg line. These are real tough fish on light line.
Mine went 5.63kgs.
I had one on 2kg line for about half an hour, but it ended up busting my 80lb leader? It must have been tail-wrapped
and bust the leader when it straightened itself. No it wasn’t a shark either!

Frank’s 18kg tuna on 6kg line gets bite of the month.
His first line class fish ever, caught while practising light line fishing!
He followed this up with a 12kg mackerel on 4kg line a week later.
Well done Frank.
