Still quite busy this
month, however things are starting to slow down now that the mackerel and tuna
have started to move north
to warmer climes.
There is still a good chance for a few pelagics but the weather has to be right
with clear water.
Most of the angling
is now for demersals, as now is the time the dhuies and snapper come in close,
school up and spawn.
Gnaraloo - Always firing
Laurie as discussed last week here are some
photos of our trip to Gnaraloo a couple of weeks ago with the 6.1m.
Our crew of
8 in 2 boats enjoyed 6 days straight of
fishing even though the last 2 days the wind did blew up.
But those boats that bailed out and didn't
fish (including your 2 smaller hire boats ) missed out on the best days fishing
for the
week- the winter solstice really had the
fish firing with spaniards (which we hadn't been able to find all week)
absolutely going nuts. The stiff southerly had
us stay in close but that didn't matter with reds,
snapper and nice size cod hitting the deck
of the boat regularly enough to make the conditions bearable.
The oldest member of the crew was my Dad at
81, who filled in at the last moment, and he showed
us "boys" how to do it, even though
he was fishing with a borrowed rod and reel and mono.
He got the best red, best pinkie, best rankin
and plenty of others in between.
Noticeable was the welcome abundance of
Robinson Sea Perch which we had only encountered a few times
over the past few years. Hordes of small
Blue-fin Tuna along with their nice sized cousins, the
yellow-fin, kept the high speed lures
active most days when moving around.
Thanks again Laurie for your help especially
going out of your way on the Saturday night to meet us at the T/o.
We'll be in touch as soon as we decide
when we are going up next year.
Ronnie got stuck into this 12 kg golden
trevally
while the rest of the crew landed what looks like
mackerel, reds and an estuary cod.
Brian Holtfreter holds up a nice red emperor
and pink snapper
while Daryl Clark shows off a 12kg yellow-fin tuna of which a
substantial portion was devoured sashimi
style that night
Greg Riebe got a nice cobia from the bottom
and Brian with a bigger red going 9kgs.

7.8m boat trip
Jaymie Wright has
fished out of my 7.8m a few times now and has had remarkable luck not only with
the weather but also landing good fish each time.
So it was this time,
over 3 days Jaymie and mates Ringo
and Mills got stuck into fish like these.
A big sambo taken on
the troll for Jaymie
and then a chunky yellow-fin caught casting out the back
of the boat while on anchor,
and Mills with a much
sort after baldchin groper.
They also picked up 4
mackerel during a short trolling session.
Ringo hooked into the
biggest pennant fish I have ever seen
and Jaymie then swapped to a lighter
outfit after getting a bit a
bored knocking over
trevally with his bigger gear, making for a lot of fun.
I had a bit of a fish
as well and pulled this big baldchin with my little Striketech reel
and a few other fish.
and when my
rod tip broke swapped to Ringo's
10lb bream gear with
a spaghetti stick, to land this 5.9kg pinky!
It seemed that all
the bigger fish came from the lighter gear, lighter leader and just a small
bean sinker directly onto a
2 snelled hook
arrangement. This has been the trend, perhaps the heavy leader, is spooking the
fish?
Mystery Fish
Here's a strange one.
Ayaz Akhtar hire my 5.3m boat last month and was back again this month, landing
mackerel and bottom fish.
However, this fish
landed late one evening just outside the river mouth had strange markings that
did not identify
it as a samson,
yellow-tail king or amberjack. Obviously a seriola species, but silver with
spots and splotches like a gold-spot trevally.
A kind of cross
between a sambo and a trevally!
About 1200mm long and
about 15kgs.

21st July
Brett Bain got a mulloway from the beach
while Daniel Tarasek got a
new club record red emperor of 9.1kgs.
Club records have to
be caught on a comp day.
Ken Neumann did well with a couple of good estuary cods
