Another
very busy month! Right in the middle of the best weather of the year. Those
that got out caught lots of fish, and
even
when the weather was not so good! I had a film crew up late this month and that
is why I have held this newsletter back so that
I
can include the photos from that trip. There has been a lot of undersize
mackerel about interspaced with bigger than average ones, which
is a
bit unusual, but the tuna have been very scarce for some reason?
There
have been lots of cobia caught this month, but that could also be due to the
increase of big sharks that are around at the moment.
Sharks
and cobia seem to stick together, so remember, if you see a big shark, or whale
shark, always be prepared to cast a popper,
stickbait
or mulie in front of it on the off chance a cobia will come out from under them
and nail the lure/mulie.
Adventure Bound TV Series
Lee
Rayner, TV/Radio Presenter, Adventure Bound, and Fishing Fever owner was over
from Melbourne filming for the Adventure Bound fishing program.
Ryan
Thipthorp from Fishing WA also came up to help out and co present the show. The
idea was to get three shows over the 3 days that they were here.
One
show on land based tailor, one on jigging for demersals and one pelagic was the
optimistic criteria.
Two
sessions land based at chimamans only resulted in a couple of small tailor, not
enough for a show, but I suggested a session from a boat at Black Rock.
I
checked the yellow book, Anglers Almanac for the bite time which showed it to
be 1.00pm that day and a high tide at 12.00pm
I
thought 11.30am and catching the top of the tide would be the right thing to
get the fish. But they flogged the white water with Rapala Stickbaits,
and
poppers without a sniff. But at 12.55pm bang the first fish hit right on the
predicted bite time!
I
took these pics from the cab while I was driving,

tailor they caught on Rapala Stickbaits.
Ryan
got the biggest. All were released, so they are still out there!
Tailor
program, done and dusted!
The following day was an early start in the
7.8m and we hung in close due to the strong easterlies. Not picking much
up
other than a couple of cod and small pinky, due to the bite time at 2.00pm, we
moved out to deeper water as the wind died down.
The
got constantly beat up by sambos at a spot so we moved away to another spot,
but ended up returning later where we then started to get a few good
demersals
such as a
6kg snapper,
dhuie, cobia and the likes. All the fish were caught on
jigs and soft plastics, no bait was on the boat.
Sambos
are a much sought after species in the eastern states evidently?
At
one stage there was an eruption of what we thought was tuna within casting
distance of the boat and Ryan cast his Williamson Yabai Jig into the
commotion
and ended up with this high jumping dolphin fish!
Demersal
episode complete!
A
Rapala Xrap Subsurface walk-the-dog was the downfall of this mackerel.
Cameraman and photographer get to it to record the moment for Ryan.
Ryan
took this well photographed cobia on a jig on the bottom
while the second day
another was taken on a stick bait cast to a whale shark
A
few tuna and mackerel on the last day rounded out the third pelagic segment on
a very successful 3 days.
Well
done to the cameraman, Jack, he got some fantastic footage! I am looking
forward to seeing the results.
The
lures used were mainly Rapala Xrap walk-the dog, both in the subsurface and
surface styles, Williamson Ebi and Yabai jigs.
Soft
plastics most successful were the McArthys 8” paddletails, minnow, bullheads in
various colours but the new chrystella
worked
well as did olive/pearl and pink/pearl. Fish the lightest jig head as you can
but 2oz was easily enough to get down there in 50m of water.
The
Adventure Bound programs will be shown on Pay TV in Perth. I will let you know
when as soon as I know.

Kalbarri Delights
Some
of the better fish caught this month by an assortment of happy anglers. Lots of
others promised to send their pics?
Sue Pollard was happy with her gold-spot trevally taken off the
bottom,
while baldies, parrotfish,
snapper,
mulloway
and another big baldy for Liam Sandford.
Good weather
produces the goods
A rushed trip up to
Kalbarri for Ryan, Daryl and Rosco to join David Brest and father-in–law Max
coincided with some great weather. Heading out deep in the 7.8m boat resulted
in big samsonfish for
Ryan,
good cobia for Daryl and
dhuie for Rosco amongst other fish.
Rosco landed this
robinson sea bream, first time I have ever seen this species in Kalbarri.
Caught now and again from Gnaraloo north,
it was a big surprise
to see it come up on Rosco’s line.
David and Max show
off their cobia taken while there was a big shark hanging around. David dropped
a much bigger one close to the boat!
Kalbarri
Offshore & Angling Club Local Comp.
21st April 2012
Pretty
ordinary weather presented itself for this comp again, but those who went out
got some good fish.
Paul
with a good snapper,
Daniel with mulloway and yellow-tail king off the beach
and Graeme’s snapper
Big Mulloway
These pics were sent to me by Brian Mosley.
It must be the biggest mulloway I have ever seen!
Caught somewhere in South Africa. Looks
like he used an overhead reel low mounted on a long beach rod.
I bet he would be over his 20kgs of
fillets if he lived in WA!
Bite of the month goes to Ryan Thipthorp for
this great dolphinfish. Ryan was co presenting for Adventure Bound Fishing
Show who were filming in my boat this month.
While jigging for demersals with a Williamson Yabai Jig, there was a bust up on
the
surface not far from the boat. Ryan wound up
quickly and cast into what he thought was a school of tuna and hooked onto this
dolphinfish or mahi mahi. Quick thinking and
great catch on a jig.
