A great start to the
month with great weather for the Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic, and then it
all went quiet for a while with green water,
few mackerel and
windy conditions.
A brief week of good
weather improved the fishing and those that got out got some really good fish.
Bookings are very
strong with most boats booked for the next few months, but there are spaces for
those who
can fit into the gaps,
and get among the big ones.
8 guys get
amongst the fish
Paul Wyndham holding
the coral trout, got a group of 7 other mates and booked 2 of my boats to get
amongst the fish.
Two days out in
pretty good weather days saw the mackerel turn on for the second day at the
Sand Patch where they
left them biting to
try their hand at some bottom species.
Amongst the snapper,
big baldchin groper and other stuff came this surprise red emperor.
Topping the day off
was this quadruple hook-up of mulloway that kept them on their toes.
Awesome weekend
on
my website for August last year, landing a nice mulloway. This year he booked 3
days in the 7.8m boat.
First
day was very difficult with a very strong easterly blowing all day. However Tu
Pham’s son Alex got his biggest fish to date,
a very
pretty pennant fish, which gave him a bit of curry on his Stella 5000 and light
rod. The second day was a lot better
and
after an unsuccessful troll for mackerel they set a burly trail over a nice
lump. It did not take long for the rods
to start bending down with snapper, dhuies, a
cobia and then 8 mulloway happened along!
The
crew above, Jaymie, Tu, Jeff, Ringo and Alex.
Third
day was the best weather with low swell, which usually indicates good fish at
Wagoe.
Heading
south first light they put the lures out at Natural Bridge and within minutes
had a broad-barred mackerel in the boat.
With
the lures out again it was only a short troll before Jaymie’s brand new Stella
20000 and GT popping rod took the hit.
Now
with a Stella loaded with 100lb braid and GT rod this should not take long, but
this fish just would not come.
We
tried driving away from it to plane it up, backing up to shorten the line, all
to no avail, it would not come. After half an hour
I’m
starting to think big shark but the head shakes and bursts of speed indicated
something else.
After
45 minutes this 18kg yellow-fin tuna pops up hooked in the side! Side hooked
fish are the hardest to land and usually
when
the pressure is put on, the skin tears away and you are left wondering. It is
sometimes best to fish a light drag and take your
time,
they will come on the end.
Nice
fish Jaymie. His biggest to date and well pleased with his new outfit.
A
troll over the Wagoe grounds was non stop action with 6 more mackerel hitting
the deck.
Jeff
and Tu hold their fish up on the overcast but glassed off seas.
Leaving
the mackerel still on the chomp, they then found a spot and set a burley trail.
It
was non stop action with snapper, mulloway, coral trout, dhuies all coming
aboard.
Tu
holds up his 5.25kg coral trout and son Alex with his Mulloway.
Jaymie
lost a big mulloway on the surface in a confusion of tangled lines, Ringo got
reefed and bust up but
12
year old Alex pulled it off with the bite on the month with this mulloway
landed on his Stella 5000 and light rod.
Easily
being his best fish to date and wins “Bite of the
Month” on my website this month.
Jaymie
shows off the days catch of narrow-barred and broad-barred mackerel, mulloway,
snapper, coral trout
breaksea
cod and dhuie and he holds his 18kg yellow-fin.
Jaymie
and the crew stayed in one of my accommodation units picking up the boat and accommodation
package, getting the boat hire discount.
12 year old Alex Pham
was out with dad Tu and a group of his mates late this month, all landing good
fish. Alex was
fishing with his Stella 5000 and light rod when he hooked this big mulloway
just off Wagoe
while the boat was on
anchor. His biggest fish ever! A great catch Alex, well done.
